Who was Angelo Moriondo?

Angelo Moriondo was born on the 6th of June, 1851, in Turin, Italy. He is the inventor of the “New steam machinery for the economic and instantaneous confection of coffee beverage” which was first patented in 1884.

Moriondo presented his invention at the General Expo of Turin in the same year, winning the bronze medal.

While his machine isn’t what we would think of as a true espresso machine because it brewed in bulk, historians credit the invention with being the father of all modern espresso machines.

Historian Ian Bersten, who discovered Moriondo’s patent, has described it as, “the first Italian bar machine that controlled the supply of steam and water separately through the coffee."

We live in gratitude to Angelo for his genius and contribution to the world, and we are thankful for the modern inventors who have refined not only the names of our current machinery, but also their components and functionality.
