Last week, the World of Coffee Expo and The World Coffee Championships 2023 took place in Athens, the remarkable birthplace of western civilisation. Brimming with historical significance and old world charm, it was only fitting to host the World Espresso Championship in this captivating city too.
For those unfamiliar with our competition, the last two years we have invited a handful of national champions, who had already competed in the World Coffee Championships, to test their skills against one another in pulling the perfect shot of espresso using our innovative Flow Regulation Technology on a Dalla Corte ZERO machine.
The renowned 360 Cocktail Bar in the bustling Monastiraki square served as the stage for this year’s event. The warm spirit of the coffee community combined with an unbeatable view of the Acropolis made it an unforgettable and enjoyable experience.
The semi-final round of the World Espresso Championship saw showdowns between Vietnamese barista Bella Pham and Australian Jack Simpson (who had secured third place in the World Barista Championship), as well as New Zealand's Barista Champion, Hanna Teramoto, against Poland's Dominika Kowalska.
From the semi-final four, only two emerged victorious, with Jack and Hanna battling it out on the rooftop bar in the final battle between Australia and New Zealand. Ultimately, it was Jack Simpson's espresso that reigned supreme, securing him the esteemed title of World Espresso Champion and a well-deserved prize of 4,000 Euro.
We couldn't be more thrilled and delighted for Jack's triumph, but it is essential to acknowledge the incredible talent and skill displayed by every participating barista. They have already proved their mettle by winning their respective national championships, earning their rightful place in the World Barista Championship. We hold immense gratitude for everyone who participated and extend our heartfelt appreciation to our exceptional sponsors, without whom this event would not have been possible.
Congratulations Jack!!! You’ve made Australia proud.
